Trip Overview

The Poon Hill Trek is especially designed for those people who want to discover the natural beauty, diverse flora and fauna, the varieties of lifestyles, culture and traditions of people along with the mesmerizing view of the Himalayas. This short trek allows the travelers to view the most spectacular mountain beauty, charming settlements and scenic locations delivering a fascinating insight that the Annapurna Region offers. The trekking trail passes through villages, terraced farmlands, forests and unparallel scenic mountains. It will invigorate your soul and also allows you to have an insight into the culture and life of the Nepalese people in the rural regions. The heart of Annapurna displays the most dramatic view of the region with the towering snow covered peaks and picturesque landscape.

Welcome to Nepal! Upon your arrival in Kathmandu Airport, you'll be met at the airport by our representative (they'll have the signboard of your name if you have booked direct or the logo of your agent if you are through your agent).

There's a short drive to the Gokarna Forest Resort, our peaceful haven on the outskirts of Kathmandu. This is your hotel base before and after trek. Your program on the hotel will be on Bed & breakfast plan.

You'll be served with welcome drink and will start briefing about your programs and collect necessary documents for permit for the trekking.

Overnight at the Gokarna Forest Resort (27°43'35.61"N 85°23'53.37" E)

Day 2 : Kathmandu - Pokhara (900 m / 2970 ft) - Majgaon (1400 m / 4260 ft) (B, L, D)

Transfer to the domestic airport for your 25 minute flight to the destination of Pokhara, the second largest tourist city of Nepal. This flight offers spectacular views of the chains of Langtang, Manaslu and Annapurna.

Upon arrival, we are greeted by our guide and will get to know the trekking team. Transfer by private vehicle to our trek starting point, Chandrakot situated at an altitude of 1580 m / 5215 ft. From here, there are spectacular views of the Annapurna South, the sacred mountain – Machhapuchhare and Modi valley. The walk of half an hour takes us to the village, Majgaon. After having lunch in the hotel, we visit a local house which has been converted into a museum in the local village of Tanchok. You can also visit a school and if there are more than 6 people in your group, the children along with the mother group will visit your place and perform local dances and typical songs of the region.

Overnight at Ker & Downey's Gurung Lodge

Day 3 : Majgaon – Landrung (1630 m / 5379 ft) (B, L, D)

After breakfast, we greet farewell to Majgaon and head towards Ker & Downey's Landrung Lodge in Landrung. The trail passes through the Rhododendron forest and small Gurung villages in between. 3 – 4 hours of walk takes us to the beautiful village of Landrung. After having lunch in the lodge, your guide will organize a small visit to nearby Gurung village.

Overnight at Ker & Downey's La Bee Lodge

Day 4 : Landrung – Ghandruk (2012 m / 6639.6 ft) (B, L, D)

As soon as we wake up, all we like doing is to enjoy the view of the majestic mountains. After the breakfast, we start out trekking by descending towards Modi Khola. The trail goes steeply down towards the river through scattered villages with beautiful views of the Himalayas then there is a steep ascent to reach Ghandruk. The lodge here in Ghandruk is built respecting the architecture Gurung, it has a large common dinning room with a friendly fireplace & nice rooms having spectacular views of the mountains.

From Ghandruk, you can have good views of Gangapurna, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Mount Annapurna and other snow-capped mountains. If time permits, visit the Annapurna Mountain Conservation Area Project (ACAP) headquarter, the local museum and the village.

Overnight at Ker & Downey's Himalaya Lodge

Day 5 : Ghandruk – Banthanti (3180 m / 10494 ft) (B, L, D)

Leaving Ghandruk, you tread along the zigzag path on a steep slope. As you ascend steeply, you pass through dense rhododendron forest to Tadapani which is an ideal vantage point to glimpse heavenly sight of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhare. After having walked for 3 hours, you finally reach Banthanti.

Overnight at Normal Lodge

Day 6 : Banthanti – Ghorepani (2874 m / 9484.2 ft) (B, L, D)

From Banthanti, you proceed further along steep trails. You climb through rhododendron forest to Deorali (3100 m / 10230 ft) and reach a hamlet and cultivated fields. Continue walking for 3 hours and finally you will find yourself in Ghorepani. Ghorepani is mainly inhabited by the magars, ethnic group of this region.

Day 7 : Ghorepani – Ulleri (1950 m / 6435 ft) (B, L, D)

Those who wish may wake up early in the morning and go for hiking to Poon Hill (3210 m / 10593 ft) for the panoramic view of the majestic mountains like Dhaulagiri, Tukuche Peak and other giant Himalayas. Later, you redescend to Ghorepani and march ahead for Ulleri. You descend gradually passing through the villages like Nangathanti and Banthanti on the way to finally reach Ulleri .

Day 8 | Tikhedhunga – Birethanti (1150 m / 3795 ft) (B, L, D)

After leisurely breakfast we head towards Birethanti. Our lodge is situated nearby Modi River Valley. The lodge has magnificent views of the sacred and unclimbed Fishtail Mountain, or Machhapuchhre, as it is locally known. Lunch is at the lodge followed by an optional walk to the village of Birethanti. Or you may choose to spend the afternoon exploring the surrounding river valley.

Overnight at Ker & Downey's Sanctuary Lodge

Day 9 : Birethanti – Pokhara (900 m / 2970 ft) (B)

After early morning tea and coffee served on your verandah, you'll have the opportunity to photograph the stunning scenery of the Annapurnas from several different locations around the Lodge. After breakfast we trek to the village of Birethanti further 1hr 30 minute walk we arrive at the Nayapool , which is situated at 1070 m / 3531 ft. This is where we meet our vehicle. From Nayapool we will return to Pokhara, a 1 hour journey. En route we can stop to visit the Tibetan Refugee Camp upon request. Arrival in Pokhara will be in time for lunch.

Overnight at Temple Tree

Day 10 : Pokhara - Kathmandu (B)

Visit around the city of Pokhara and later in the afternoon, take a flight to Kathmandu. On arrival in Kathmandu, we'll transfer to the hotel. Then you've free time to relax or head into the city. We find most people want to simply unwind and enjoy the hotel facilities – whatever you choose, we'll help!

Overnight at Gokarna Forest Resort

Day 11 : Kathmandu (B, L, D)

After enjoying a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, we'll be met by our guide for our day trip to a few of the Kathmandu valley's most spectacular and important sights and some vibrant, colourful markets.

With a meld of three ancient capitals and their associated palaces, temples and markets of Kathmandu has a lot to offer culturally and historically. However, we're mindful not to overload you so we will ensure the day has a good balance between sightseeing, exploring and relaxation time.

The exact itinerary may change depending on the local conditions but we shall most likely visit:

  • Pashupatinath, one of the most important temples in South Asia to the Hindu God, Lord Shiva;
  • One of the three Durbar (Palace) Squares , a complex of palaces and temples which was formally the social, religious and administrative focal point of the ancient city
  • Boudhnnanath Stupa, a wonderful Buddhist site centred on a huge Stupa topped with the all-seeing eyes. If possible we'll come here in the early evening to soak up the atmosphere of hundreds of Tibetan and Sherpa peoples walking their devotional khora
  • Overnight at the Gokarna Forest Resort.

Day 12 : Depart Nepal

Useful information for your trek

Insurance: It is essential that you have appropriate travel insurance for this trip. Make sure your insurance includes helicopter rescue and evacuation. Previous clients have used the BMC (UK), Snowcard, WorldNomad and TravelEx.

Nepal country information and visas: for European, US, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand visitors you can either purchase a visa in advance from the Nepalese Embassy in your home country of buy one on arrival at Tribhuvan Airport, Kathmandu. A 30 day visa currently costs $40pp payable in USD or Nepali Rupees. You'll need a passport photograph.

Recommended periods

Spring: March – June. Come and visit when the rhododendrons and alpine flowers are in full bloom. Expect clear skies and sunshine in the mornings with some light cloud cover later in the day

Autumn / Winter: October – January. October can be busy, but at this time of year the weather is normally very stable except crisp sunny days and cold evenings.

Level of difficulty: this trek is it for you?

The “Nepal Panorama” program is designed for the people who don’t wish to go to high altitude but still want a taste of the landscapes, rich variety of scenery, people and activities Nepal has to offer.

The trekking is easy to moderate having the longest 6 hours of walking and the paths and tracks are generally wide and well-marked.

However, we ask that you have a reasonable level of fitness, but you don’t need to be an experienced trekker to enjoy this trip. It’s an ideal trip for first time trekkers. Your trek leader or guide will ensure we take a comfortable pace on the trail and support every step of the way. If you engage in regular physical activity like light walking, cycling, swimming, etc., you should find this trek well within your means.
